A New Life

2 Corinthians 5:16-17 (Common English Bible)–16)So then, from this point on we won’t recognize people by human standards. Even though we used to know Christ by human standards, that isn’t how we know Him now. 17) So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, new things have arrived.

Colossians 3:9-10(New Living Translation)—9) Do not lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds. 10) In its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within you.

The first thing we do to begin a new life is privately accept Jesus into our heart as Lord of our life. This is when we say our sincere salvation prayer, which confesses how we believe Jesus is the only begotten Son of God and we shall be saved. Nothing can take our salvation away from us. This is when we receive the Holy Spirit and become a child of God.

After we are saved (born-again spiritually), it is important to find a Christian church that preaches and teaches from God’s Word. The Pastor will teach about baptism, which symbolizes a spiritual rebirth. Baptism is not forced on us—it is solely our choice if we want to be baptized or not. It is a very important decision. Jesus was baptized.

Baptism is sharing our testimony with others to show we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It is confessing our love for Him. When someone is baptized by immersion (dunked in water), it symbolizes our dying with Christ; and when we rise out from the water we are spiritually born again with Christ. We have a new life.

A new life brings changes. Other people should start seeing changes in our lives. Our desires will become His desires. There will be less world-like actions from us, and more of Him. Our world-like ways were put to death, such as: sexual sin, impurity, shameful desires, greed, and idolatry—anything that takes our mind off God. We used to act upon our fleshly desires, now we have a spiritual hunger. It is time to get rid of things like: anger, rage, jealousy, malicious behavior, slander, gossip, dirty language, drunkenness and drug use because God chose us to be holy.
(Read Galatians 5:16-6:2).

Instead, we are to put on the characteristics of Christ: tender-hearted mercy, joy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, self-discipline, and brotherly love. The most important spiritual fruit of all is love.

We are a work in progress. The Holy Spirit will work on us from the inside out, and help us mature spiritually. No one is perfect, but we strive to be as close as we can with His help. (Philippians 1:6 [Common English Bible]– I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus).

We are babies in Christ at first. It is our choice on how long it takes to mature. Either we follow the Lord and His ways and obey God’s commandments and stay in the Word, or we don’t. If we don’t follow the righteous path then the process to Christian maturity will be a lot slower.

1 Peter 1:3(New Living Translation)—All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for it is by His boundless mercy that God has given us the privilege of being born again…(Read the whole chapter of 1 Peter 1).

Read John 3:1-21—In this scripture you will read what Jesus says about being born-again (spiritually) and being baptized.

Read Mark 1-20—This is about John the Baptist and when he baptized Jesus.

Also, in Matthew 3:1-4:25 speaks of John the Baptist and Jesus’ baptism. Plus, the temptation that Jesus went through in the wilderness.

John 1:19-34 also speaks of John the Baptist and baptizing Jesus.—John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin.

Read Romans 7:7-Romans 8:39—These scriptures deal with the Christian struggle that we deal with our flesh and spirit, our life in the Spirit, and the future glory of accepting Christ in our lives.

Philippians 1:9-11 (Common English Bible)–This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. I pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ. I pray that you will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God.

I hope you enjoy this study as much as I did. God bless you.
